Brooke's video Guilin trip April 1-5, 2014

59 weeks

Ni Hao,

Oh the water problems here! They turned the water off to fix a broken pipe. Estimated work time, midnight - 6am. Here it is 4pm and the water is still not working. They keep delivering 5 gallon water bottles as if that will help.  Rhoda and I decided to call off the hike this morning just in case...turned out to be a good call.  Todd went on his run thinking it would be back on when he came home to get ready for his flight to Beijing.  He was completely soaked, no shower available. He went down to the pool to shower...water was off there too. So, he jumps in the pool, only they were disinfecting the pool so the workers came chasing after him.  He HAD to! Brigham took Sophie down to Tonan to get haircuts. I said a prayer she would come back looking like a girl. They both came back looking fine.  Brooke has a final tomorrow and then we can go somewhere, anywhere! We are itching to see something new before seminary starts up. ONE MONTH FROM TODAY WE GET TO HUG ALLY!!  So exciting.  Finish strong Syster.  No email from Chase today.

Taco Tuesday-Rhoda and I picked up Fiona at the corner for the weekly International Women's Club coffee morning.  They have a buffet at the Hilton Hotel.  The club has so many members now, includng lots of moms with babies and young children. There were toys all over the floor of the fancy lobby/dining area. School then tacos and mini melts (dippin' dots).  The girls also had a mini, impromptu modeling session, right in the middle of Seaworld.  Not really our "thing", but the photographers were insistent and just wanted some photos of the girls in their clothing line...the dresses looked like the ones they sell at costco for little girls.  Then they wanted a few of Brooke and Brigham took off- he wanted none of that!  We had a good laugh, bought some fruit from the fruit cart and walked home.  Todd arrived late home from Beijing.  No word from Chase today either.

Wed: no word from Chase again. Hiked with Rhoda and the weather was perfect! Cool and breezy in all the right places of the hike.  Brig went swimming with church friends and Brooke taught some things and learned some other things at mutual where they had an activity on teaching a skill to others. We started the Mandarin lessons back up today. Becky was here with homework, the kids were THRILLED.  I was happy to listen from the next room, that they remembered most of what they learned before summer.

Thursday: Finally, Chase emailed today, which happened to be better timing...I could actually hear from him ON his birthday.  He is "loving it so much", which is great to hear.  It was hard not seeing him on his birthday but happy he is happy and doing so well. Lunched with Joyce, Sophia, Nicole, Christine, Anja and Rhoda at Simply Life.

Brooke took two finals and is loving the freedom between classes.  The girls went toMacau (an hour's ferry ride away from Shekou) while the boys went (stand up) jet skiing with the Youses at a beach two hours away.    We walked the Venetian shops and had fun touring the Portuguese/Chinese city. Such an odd combo, and such a beautiful place.  It was mostly clean and we liked all of the old European style buildings and colors.  There were import food stores, cobblestone streets, Chinese markets, an old library/courtyard and many upscale shops.  (Thanks for the tips, Alicia!).  The hotel shuttle took us from the ferry terminal to the hotel, to the shops and our show. We walked down a super busy street and at the end were the ruins of St. Paul.  Very impressive, along with the amount of people that were there with us. So. Many. People!

Todd and Brigham both ended up with sunburns from the beach.  They wore themselves out, ate some delicious fried noodles and had a good time with Shannon and Craig.  China lets you ride jet skis right next to the beach, I guess...So they were able to try to jump the waves.  The problem was that you ended up jet skiing between swimmers, surfers, boogie boarders, etc.  But they had a good time.  Thanks Youses.

While we were sitting at the pool in Macau, there was a family of four, parents and a baby and toddler. They were from Europe somewhere. Their little boy in his swimming suit, water shoes, life jacket and goggles on top of his head grabbed his parent's camera and took off running. It was funny to see the potbellied, flat footed, dark curly haired, euro swimsuit wearing Dad chase the boy over the bridges crossing the pool. The little boy was grinning with the camera, shining like a mirror, dangling in his little hand.

From Sophie: so when we went to Macau we ordered room service at 12 am and played a game then we went to a cool water show got hot coco went home got some rest then we went to the mall and then a market and got some mixed up flavor cotton candy and then we went to a cool church that had only 1 side then we went to forever 21 then we got a taxi to the fairy terminal and got home and saw the boys and ate pizza that is the end of sophie

Brynn: Macau was so dang fun!  we shopped and walked and talked and just had the best time. on the last day, we saw some really cool ruins and it was also the first time i ever felt sweat dripping down my face:/ sanfords are here right now and it is a party!! hahahha. that is the end of brynn

We ended the weekend with a devotional and popcorn (when will I ever learn which butter NOT to buy? Some brands taste way better than others) . Coxs and Sears and Sandfords stopped by along with Kimberly and Holly. Brooke gave a thought and then we watched the kids perform tricks. We evidently now have a Taylor variety show...360 degree jumps in both directions, front walkovers, Rubik's cube, etc.  and we planned out our morning exercise schedule with the Sandfords, Sears and Coxs.  There was another new family today, The Stahle family from Oregon.  He does something with food production and they have two little boys, Lincoln and Cole.  We love the people we have met here, old and new.  Todd and Brigham both gave great talks today on "The Witness" by Elder Packer.

I hope you all enjoy the rest from your Labors this weekend. Keep in touch. Come visit!

Brooke's video for the Ho Family

58

Chase's Birthday is Thursday so send him a howdy attaylor.chase@myldsmail.net by about 8PM Sunday night your time and he should get it on his PDay before his bday. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you.

I did a short yoga class before hiking Nanshan Mountain this morning.  I got all bug-sprayed up and ran to meet Rhoda at the gate.  We met the other hikers from SWIC and headed up the mountain.  Breezy in spots which made it bearable.  We also took breaks in the shade, much needed after taking the summer off.  We hiked with Kris from Belgium, Sophie from France (her kids speak Italina, Mandarin, English and French) and Adele from Brisbane, Australia (Gold Coast). Chase emailed while we were at the top so it was a bit sketchy walking down the steep steps and trying to email back and read his letter at the same time.  James Taylor's "How Sweet it Is" plays every time an email from Ally or Chase comes, so that was a nice accompaniment to the descent.  Back at home.  School is in session.

Tuesday: ran to catch the shuttle bus with Pon and Rhoda to metro. The bus was full today. The driver needs headphones on with a load of ladies chatting in all sorts of languages. We are having a neighborhood party at our house on Friday so trying to get some things ready for that. I went to get some things printed on vinyl. I spent over an hour getting all the sizes down and I paid and then he was going to show me how the vinyl sticks on the wall and is removable but when he lifted the sample it pulled off the wall in chunks. Sooooo instead of vinyl they are using photo paper. Not what I had in mind, but the language barrier is difficult so we are just going with this one. The girls had had enough at this point, it was pouring rain and dinner time. We already spent an hour at the bank trying to get back a double payment. Try explaining that one in Chinese! I've got to get the tutor back on schedule. We dropped off a subway sandwich to Brigham at the qsi gym where he was playing basketball, bought a few movies, stopped by Pons for a new delicious Thai dish and apple cobbler. Finished some school with Sophie, switched the laundry, cleaned up the kitchen and read as a family.

Wore pjs all day. Lots of visitors too: Rhoda, Aaron the property manager, the print shop, Ernesto and shannon. The kids gathered and headed to the church for the first mutual activity of the school year. We missed Shane at the pre-activity dinner. We could however, add some spice now that he's gone. Brooke and Brynn did the ice bucket challenge.

Thursday: halfway through manicures a big fluffy white dog walked into the nail place (on the third floor) and licked Brooke's leg. Her favorite! One of the workers thought she was sitting on a small stool but it was a small trash can and she fell into the can and tipped over. I have a hard time holding it together when I'm looking at Brooke, but we made it without laughing (out loud) this time.  We stopped by the eye "dr" and the print shop too. The smell of hot, wet garbage is enough to make me stay away from old town Shekou Til the weather cools down. I navigated through an order on samsclub.cn, or maybe not!  We will see what gets delivered Friday morning.(I did get a random box of some vegetable I don't recognize. He pointed to it on the receipt but I don't know what it is. )  Brigham started 9th grade and plays sports with his buddies (and a fair Amount of girls!) everyday at 3. Todd called and asked me to a dinner with his co-workers. Michael from Sweden and Joseph Smith from London along with Susan, the translator. We went to our standby Indian restaurant (everyone is jealous of our gold metal discount card that they no longer give out, inherited from the Kesters). While we were waiting for our order, a boy george looking guy with a Bird (looked like a magpie) on a leash walks to the "order up" window where the waiters get the food from the chef and asks the kitchen workers, "can I have a piece of chicken for my bird? Just a small piece."  The kitchen handed out a piece and the bird flapped it's wings, ate some, dropped some on the floor, ate that and then they left. Disgusting.

Friday: Up and prepping the house for tonight.  We painted, put some things up on the walls, organized the pantry, cleaned the fridge and waited for deliveries from Sam's Club, Nogogo, the print shop, the ice/water shop.  It was a busy day and all the kids pitched in and helped.  We had a good turnout of neighbors and it was good to say more than a quick hello.  Everyone brought a dessert or an appetizer so we had a nice mix of things to eat as well. We now have new friends from Italy, Sweden, Australia, Netherlands, Germany and Boston.  Brigham and his two buddies bought ingredients and cooked some chinese spicy wraps by themselves.

There are great people everywhere.  Looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow.

Saturday: Todd and Jeff ran at 7 and he has been wiped out from the week-fell back asleep until 11:30am. The girls and I picked up glasses from Peter and  went to lunch at malls. Grocery store too, where the girls had some fun with the exercise equipment displays.  There was a whole row of massage chairs and foot massagers and every seat was filled with tired shoppers.  They all got a kick out of the girls on the bouncing platforms trying to do aerobics. We tried some popsicles- grape with a kiwi slice in the middle, watermelon with kiwi, "cheese" with a strawberry-tasted like butter, and mango/grape.  Todd and Brigham, meanwhile, went to the sports store for new soccer cleats.  Todd had the whole house pretty cleaned up by the time we got home. He then went with Brigham to Red Lantern to order some Chinese food for dinner.  Pres. Cox and Rhoda came over with a banjo in tow and gave us a mini concert (very impressive) while we waited for the Nashes and dinner.

Sunday: Camerons were back with their new baby, Jack. Played piano for primary and Captain "Scripture Power" made a visit in primary.  He suddenly burst through the door when the kids started singing "scripture power".  He mentioned that Chase used to sing…"keeps you safe from Sid" when he was little (instead of sin as the song goes). Lunch and letter writing, Nashes headed back to Hong Kong.  Todd works in Beijing this week. We will miss Chase on his 19th birthday a little more than the normal days.  I looked in the mirror to brush my teeth tonight and a lizard was on the wall behind me.  Sophie and Brigham caught him and put him out on the deck.

Hope all is well with you. Keep in touch, come visit!

Everyone should live in china at least once...by Andrea Xu

Everyone Should Live In China At Least Once

Live in China, and be surrounded by the 1.4 billion people that inhabit the country. Surprisingly enough, there will be moments where you feel completely and utterly alone. You will learn the power of human interaction, and you will learn to appreciate your friends and family more. You might become more shameless, and be more prone to striking up conversations with strangers. You’ll build relationships that you never would have had otherwise.
Go and live in China, for the sake of wholly immersing yourself in a culture where the language is completely different, where people are glued to their cellphones and iPads, where most people grew up without a sibling. You will be marveled by how remarkably similar and different we are from one another, but how we are all connected through humanity.
Experience the pushing, the cutting in lines, the yelling, the honking, the gawking, the thumping in your heart as you play Frogger with your life every time you cross the street. You’ll learn patience. If you’re a foreigner who doesn’t look Chinese, experience the fan girl club, of being stopped so often to have a picture taken with you that you might be in the cellphones of hundreds of giddy Chinese girls. If you are a foreigner who does look Chinese (or is Chinese), prepare to be seen as the translator, even if your more foreign-looking counterpart has better Chinese than you. People will be confused about the fact that you are American, but have Chinese origins. You’ll experience identity issues of race and gender you may have never felt otherwise.

Go live in China, and the dormant history nerd in you will emerge. Observe the juxtaposition of towering skyscrapers next to dilapidated apartment complexes, of streets lined with luxury stores such as Louis Vuitton and Fendi when right around the corner are shacks and stands of cheap Chinese goods. Revel in how a country that was turned upside down from the Cultural Revolution only 30-some years ago has transformed itself into a country pushing its way to the forefront. You’ll feel as if you are living through a crucial moment of history, as if something dramatic can happen any moment. Take in the excitement.
Then, leave the big city, and find a rural village. Get transported back into time, and observe a simpler life. Watch the barefoot children play among the fields, farmers planting rice in steeple terraces with oxen, chickens running amok and the elderly with leathery skin and missing teeth. See if anyone comes up to you and asks you to help read to them the writing on the seed packet–I bet you some of them will. Stay in the village for as long or for as short as you want, but just remember this: juxtaposition. How a country can have cities like Shanghai and Beijing, but also villages tucked deep into the mountains you can’t imagine why people would move there in the first place, how basic amenities such as electricity can sometimes be a luxury. Does this qualify China as a developing nation still? Perhaps. So go to a village. You’ll learn to think. Priorities may change. (That, and don’t forget to go to the bathroom there at least once. I guarantee you it’ll just be a hole in the ground).
Go, go live in China and experience the chaos, the people, the culture, the food. Go and meet new people, talk to strangers, learn their history–it’ll be so much more different than what you’re used to. Get pushed and shoved, feel alone, and appreciate humanity all the more when you find that one person who isn’t trying to rip you off or cuts you short when you stumble through your Chinese. Pay it forward. Embrace the nation with two arms, and laugh it off when you get bogged down by so many frustrations that you just want to scream at the nation. Because you will. And when you return to the States, or wherever you are from, you’re going to be a different person. You will have stories. Stories of rickshaw drivers, of baijiu, of tonal mishaps, of being ripped off, of babies defecating on the street, of those euphoric moments where living in China for this brief period was worth it. You won’t regret it.
Everyone should live in China at least once.

Monday: Back to school blessings from Todd for FHE along with birthday card making for both of our missionaries.  We worked on school ( I did not sign up to be a home school teacher, but I AM, I AM. ) Third grade wore me out today.  We made cauliflower crust pizza from pinterest and Todd said it's a keeper.  The gym was all torn up today, ladders, dry wall dust, tarps over the equipment and machines all moved around. The bike was uncovered and plugged in so I went riding amidst the mess.

Tuesday: Brynn and I ferried to Hong Kong and mailed birthday packages to Ally and Chase. Hoping they get there on time.  We had fun picking out a few things from Hong Kong to add to our homemade cards. {Brynn here: hong kong date with mom:) we shopped and mailed birthday packages to our siblings and also ate a really good lunch at pret a manger!! so good! we got really good macaroons at the last mall. got a fanta freeze before the ferry! i napped the whole way back and accidentally left my spicy cheese garrets popcorn on the ferry:/ should've gone back and got it. really long taxi line. i love hong kong so much!!}  It rained off and on but we didn't see much while going from underground and popping into shopping centers and then going back under ground to the ferry building and back home.  Todd was working from home after noon ( he even did the laundry, Thanks!), Brooke was doing school, Sophie was trying to navigate with my handwritten lesson plan for the day. Brigham... We brought back bagel bites, cheese sticks, gnocchi, pie crusts, croissants, French butter, doritos, Garrett's popcorn and olive crackers from Marks & Spencer.

Wednesday: Brigham is over watching the three Ho boys for the morning. He left at 7:45am to catch the subway.  It's been raining all morning.  Todd went running with Jeff early and was out the door by 7am.  Girls are still asleep, it's 10am and I keep going down to wake them, but the room is dark and the rain is their sound machine and I just can't. The house is peacefully quiet and they look too comfortable and cozy. School finally started here around noon.  Not as productive when starting that late.  Kids all went to Tovars for games/snacks/movie so Todd and I had a bonus dinner date. [brooke: that morning was the best. I love waking up to rain! At the Tovars, we played monopoly and ate cheetos. and they weren't stale! We later watched a movie but it took us about half an hour to agree on one. Lone Ranger was the compromise.]  We walked home in the rain and planned a bit more for our trip to pick up Ally. Just need a rental car or two and we should be good to go.  Five flights, 4 hotels in one week.  We will be pooped when we get home.

It's nearly 11PM but I'm trying to stay up to watch a seminary & institute social media broadcast that starts at 9AM Utah time.

Thursday: Sophie and I went to the pool.  She was doing flips off the side and having a fun time but I couldn't sit there one more minute.  I was being eaten alive by the tiniest of gnats.  I could barely even see them on my skin.  The bites last for over two weeks and when one bite starts itching, it activates all the others; it's awful! So, I told her it was time to go.  She bought an ice cream cone with her own money and had the wrapper in one hand and the cone in the other when I told her to hold on for the scooter ride home. I ended up with ice cream in my right ear and on my left shoulder.  Awesome.

My friend Anna moved out today, sad day. We will have to visit them in Hong Kong now, and I hope they come back once in a while too.

Friday:  Brigham took another final today. Brooke and I took some photos of the Ho family at Shenzhen Bay Park.  Milani is headed to BYU Hawaii on Monday (sniff, sniff). She will be greatly missed.  We are still mourning over Carina also.   Gabe is also here  on his last weekend before heading back to the US. We went to pizza hut with Ernesto Jr. too, and ordered big...three pepperoni pizzas (Gabe calls them deep fried pizzas) and four orders of waffle fries.  Breaking the calorie bank tonight! We topped it off with baskin robbins ice cream and Brooke spotted a new shop called  "Coffee Restaurant Mr. Pork" (?) that was selling dippin' dots (but calling them Mini Melts).  They found a new show to watch...Master Chef Jr.  [Brooke: Brynn woke up and told me that she had a dream that she was in the Master Chef Jr. competition, and they had to make dippin' dots. Sophie woke up a few minutes later and mentioned that her dream included dippin' dots and Master Chef Jr. as well!]

Saturday: David, our cross border driver, was here at 7AM for our day trip to Hong Kong.  We also had a visit from the Youses who are back in town. The kids had fun catching up with Shannon. We had a lot of time since the border took over an hour and a half. We met the Hong Kong Mission President, President Hawkes, and he offered to take a few pictures for us at the temple. After the temple, Todd and I met the kids and shopped at Taste-an international grocery store, lunched at Simply Life. Joyce and I went to CN Square, the four story art store, while everyone else went to the movies.  Sanfords came to stay (love that!) and More Master Chef Junior, a little baking and lunch prep for Sunday and off to bed.   We received bad news about my nephew, Harry,  who was in an accident, hoping for successful surgeries and a speedy, uncomplicated recovery.  Hard to be away when family is rallying around one of their own.

Sunday: Ernesto Jr. gave a great talk on service and we had a bishopric change today. Colby Sanford and Jeff Jackson (just his 3rd Sunday here in China) are the new counselors and both will be great! Thanks to John Warr for all the time and effort he spent in service to the branch.  Todd will head to Guangzhou next week with President Cox to make some YM visits.  We had some jet lagged, gone too long, friends for lunch along with Holly (the cute red head from Canada here as a nanny) and Kimberly ( an attorney from UT).   Have a great vacation Ho family! Donna and Carrie and Cherie, are you ever coming back?

Rhoda and I are starting the Nanshan Mountain hike tomorrow morning with the Shenzhen International Women's Club hiking group and the mosquitos.  Joyce, are you in?

Time for some family weekly planning...girls are climbing up the doorway, doing front walkovers and hand standing next to the wall and walking sideways down the length of the wall.  Brig called Sophie away for a card game and Brooke is working on another video.  Todd is working on Ally's invitation letter to China for her visa. All is well.

Take care, keep in touch, come visit!

Love from China,

你好

Nǐ hǎo.

Finally emptied out the last of the boxes from moving here,  this morning. Kids logged on to school but the site was updating...kinda like a snow day. They did their reading and the Hos called...they could go ice skating today. Perfect.  We picked the three boys up from Milani on the platform of Haiyue and off we went.  Ben, Teddy and Ian are the cutest little guys that run in their pack of three and are the best of friends.  Sophie forgot her socks but remembered her helmet.  Brynn remembered her socks but accidentally on purpose left her helmet at home.  "It wouldn't fit over my high bun."

I sat at Caffe Bene with an iced chocolate drink and watched them skate for 90 minutes. They got better as the time marched on, and I am used the free wifi.  "WEEFEE" as one of my girls first called it.  We went to McDonald's afterwards for ice cream cones, but ended up with chicken nuggets, fish sandwiches, fries, orange juice and cheeseburgers.  This was with little fingers pointing at a picture menu and three languages being spoken.  The five of them ate every last crumb and home we went.

Such great letters from the missionaries today. I have to say that them being happy and positive makes it so much easier on me.  I'm grateful they are having such great life experiences, learning languages and serving others.  I spoke with Stacy Jackson, a girl who has been home for a month now about the transition back after a mission.  Hopefully it will be easy for Ally.  Stopping off at China might be just the distraction she needs before heading back to the states.  I can't wait to see her walking around China with new eyes.

Brigham went to the field  to meet up with friends for soccer/basketball.  So glad they are back and he's got some friends to hang out with.  So many girls at our house right now.  He has picked up juggling recently and is quite good.  Brooklyn is working hard on her chemistry and World History.

On shuttle bus to ikea. A French mom and four little ones riding too. Her kids keep singing sweet songs in unison. The streets are lined with lush trees and shrubs with bright shocks of yellow, purple and hot pink flowers. Delivery mopeds and wheeled vehicles of all types going by with us and against us. I just mouthed "THIS. IS. AWESOME." into the reflection of myself in the shuttle bus window.  Trying to soak it all in because I now know how quickly the time will fly by.

This came at 11:38am (after disinfection was already underway!) Tuesday:

Jingshan Management Center

So ya, we may have rats coming out our toilets like my friends Jordana and Pon. I messaged home to the kids, "tape the drains, shut the toilet lids and put something heavy on them".  All they could find was washi tape, so we have some fabulous looking drains right now.

Woke up to a super thunderstorm.  The lightening was showing up, even in the daylight.  Yao Feng cooked us a delicious lunch today. She takes my random, almost not usable veggies and makes the best dishes with them.  It's a treat when we ask her to cook and she says "yes".  Bonus: she does the dishes afterwards too.  I went to the gym to ride the bike, walk in, and stinky guy IS ON THE BIKE. There's only one bike, besides the low down bike that isn't plugged in,  and the pedals have no resistance.  He sprayed the bike down with cleaner and wiped it good.   I let it sit for about 20 minutes then  I  brought some clorox wipes (never did that before but was lucky today I guess) and took my turn.  The bike didn't stink, but he kept coming to use the tricep machine right next to the bike.  I will say that it's easier to breathe while riding the bike with stinky guy in the gym, than to run and breathe with stinky guy in the gym.

Todd worked late today. He came home and the kids went bowling for mutual.   Our friends, the Greenlands, received word last week that they were relocating to a city near Hongzhou (near Shanghai)..then early this week the company said they wanted them there right away and had purchased tickets for them to come on Wednesday.  So they packed on Monday and left on Tuesday.  Roy is from American Fork and Lina is from Brasil.  A really nice couple.

Thursday: Brigham has been waiting for this day...his friend Ernesto is back.  All is right in the world. He was down at the fields with more boys that have come back from their summer vacations.  I watched him play soccer from up in the gym.  Stinky guy was there, but I was almost finished.  I now know that he comes around 3:30PM on weekdays and 10AM on saturdays and can adjust my schedule accordingly.

We corresponded with Chase's companion, Elder Tribe's parents this week.  It's been fun getting to know a little about them. Hopefully we will meet them in person some day.

Friday: Ernesto made his appearance. ALL the kids wanted to go to lunch with him so down to their favorite noodle shop they went.  Yao Feng went shopping for me and brought back mangos and grapes and melon along with a big bag of rice.  She not only delivers, she puts it away.  She also hunted down a small fuse for our power converter and asked about a new xbox cord since ours accidentally got plugged into the 220v socket, popped a couple of times and then started smoking.  Oops.  Brigham went to a friend's to play FIFA and order mcdonald's and eat homemade cookies. The girls and I went to the new Chili Party restaurant. The pic below is the menu...no English speakers so we had to look up the characters from one sheet and order on the other.

We had fun chatting with the taxi driver.  We can about say all the Chinese words we know in a 15 minute drive.  The taxi driver smiles, asks questions and then starts rambling beyond what we can comprehend. And they always give us a thumbs up and a smile and ask us twice to make sure we knew what we said when we tell them there are six kids in our family.  Todd got home at almost 11PM from work today.  He had a good day of presenting and dinner following the presentations at a hotel nearby.  From Todd: I'm having a good time at work lately.  I was in an all-day meeting on Friday and I saw the best China chewing-out that I've yet to see.  The big boss completely called someone out in a meeting, yelling at them and telling them they were worthless (and luckily, the translator kept going through the lambasting :) )...a few hours later, at the dinner, they were best of buddies again, laughing and joking. I guess this is typical China

SAT: Todd and I had a date today.  We went to the bank.  A worker there was doing a transfer for us on the computer in the lobby.  A girl came up and stood shoulder to shoulder to the worker and watched everything she was doing on our account...balances, who we were transferring to, how much etc.  I kept looking at her like, "excuse me, that is private information!" she looked at me twice and just smiled and never did leave until we were finished with the computer.  We walked down to another bank but it was closed, went to the new subway sandwich restaurant (this one has real mustard! and dill pickles!).  Next we walked down to old Shekou to get a bike pump, 1m sheets of vinyl, and a birthday present for Ally.  We couldn't find a taxi and Todd is sort of impatient with things like that, so he hired two mopeds donned with umbrellas and off we went with all of our garb-me with a large bag and  5 meters of rolled vinyl in 5 different colors and Todd with a bag of sandwiches and cookies, a drink and a tall bike pump.  I was a minute ahead of Todd and hoped he was making sure I went where I was supposed to go.  It was kind of fun to run red lights. I did get nervous to have busses honking from behind. We finally got off the busy street and went down the bike lane, but that's just as scary.  He was playing chicken with multiple bikers coming the other way.  I think between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, people don't know which side of the walk to go on.  I know I get confused.  Hong Kong left, Shenzhen, right.  Todd was getting ready to go to the pool with the girls when it started pouring rain again.  They did make it after the rain stopped.

Waiting for a grocery delivery from Overseas market and then going to Coastal City for dinner before making tomorrow's lunch, tonight. Gabe Granata will get to stay here again with us. We had fun eating dinner (found a place with ICE and FREE REFILLS in CHINA, what? ) I might have had like 6 cokes in a row, just because I could.  The boys took one taxi home with Sophie.  He sent us the usual, "I forgot to grab the house key from you" so the girls and I quickly tried to find a taxi.

SundayPictures of Chase on the mission blog here If you go the link, he is in the exercise photo next to his cousin, Chase Hansen, center, back row. I'm sure that was fun for both of them.

Church was good and is filling up more and more each week as summer travelers return. Happy to see Sarah and the girls, Tovars and the AZ sisters and Rhoda again. Can't wait for the rest of my friends to get back!   I love our little branch. Brigham was set apart as the Teacher's Quoram President today.  Interviews with Pres. Turner & Pres. Cox, thankful for all they do for the branch.  Our friend Kimberly taught the girls a new game and we had a nice visit and chat with Gabe and the Tovars.  Sunday naps, letter writing and a few games.

Grama Mary, HAPPY BIRTHDAY this week!
All is well in China.  Keep in touch, come visit!

Gimme a high 55

Monday: lazy day at home, school most of the day. I made some minestrone soup and used the kitchenAid mixer for the first time making some chocolate chip cookies.  So glad to have my mixer back with me. Watched a few online cooking classes on how to properly julienne, chop, dice, mince, matchstick veggies, and properly cut an onion.  Still smile thinking about the security techs seeing that kitchenAid go through in my carry on suitcase.

Tuesday: Oh Tuesday. Chase was emailing us late in the night. like until 12:45 am.  then we were up at 3am to call into a conference line so that he could call us between 3am-8am. He finally called at 6:45am. So great to hear his voice.  He told us some funny stories, spoke a little mandarin and we all shed a few tears.  In my patriarchal blessing it talks about motherhood being my greatest calling, challenge and blessing. I now understand the challenge portion.  It's tough sending out your children, even though it's for a great cause, it's still a sacrifice. He called again from LAX, briefly, and then just like that, he was gone.  I had the sads for the rest of the day. We went for our traditional last Tuesday of the month taco Tuesday, picked up a few movies and groceries, gave a bit of money to one of our favorite beggars-the one Chase liked,  and walked home in the dark. Letter from Ally, her time is quickly coming to an end and she's making the most of her last part of her mission.

Wednesday: Pon came over early this morning with fudge from

Mackinac Islan
 d.
Yum! Todd's favorite so we tried to save him some.  Mandarin study, Laundry. Rode the bike at the gym, it was stinking hot in there today.  A guy came in...I thought it was stinky guy, but luckily it wasn't.  Yoga, face planted while trying the crow pose.  Lots of school today. Sophie had to write a report on Ocean habitats and make an Arizona poster.  Brynn worked on division and Brigham worked on a Sherlock Holmes short story project.  Brooke was doing science experiments but we are lacking a kitchen scale.  Will hunt for one tomorrow. Pon snagged two green papaya for us from a tree in the neighborhood, she knows how to pick the good ones.  Todd is enjoying work and headed to the gym/pool with Sophie. She got an eyeful in the women's locker room I guess. Brooke and Brigham went to the Ho's with Sydney to watch a movie, we watched Heaven is For Real

 here at home.

Thursday: Pon sent me a text around 8:30AM asking if I wanted to go with her on the shuttle to Shamu (Sam's Club). We left 30 minutes later and were there about an hour after that.  A new Korean friend also went along for the ride...Soo Choi.  We shopped until our carts were stuffed-peaches were my favorite find.  Chase's mission president emailed us some photos on the way home.  We were so excited to hear that his trainer is one of the Elders we met when we visited last March.  Chase mentioned that it would be pretty great if one of them would be his trainer.  (photo below with Elder Tribe).  He will be serving in the Eight Mile Plains area. His MTC companion also went to that area.  The mission president's wife keeps a blog and the write up of the new missionaries, with a few pictures of Chase, is here.

Todd called home and had some excitement from work...in his words, So I'm sitting at work around 4 in the afternoon when all kinds of sirens start going off.   Not really loud, but then someone with a megaphone started to shout in Chinese and everyone else started evacuating.  I figured a fire drill.  I was right.  A Chinese fire drill :)

I packed up my bag and headed for the elevators, not working...its a firedrill.  So went to the stairwell (I'm on the 6th floor) which is packed with....Chinese.  It takes 15 minutes or so to file out down the 6 flights of stairs.   We would've burned or died from smoke inhalation.  In the event of a real fire, I must remember to go out the window and to jump into the trees like Rambo off the cliff.

Once outside...they yelled at us for not being able to exit more quickly, then had everyone go back inside.  Back to work...had this happened in France...they would still be off work and complaints would've been filed by the workers against the company.  Not in China.

The girls and I went to Coastal City.  Sophie wanted fries, "I don't even care if I don't have ketchup!" It took until past 10PM to find a taxi.

Friday: Todd got home after a long day. It took us over an hour, as a family, to decide what to do on our Friday night.  We finally decided to walk down to Sea World for dinner.  As I went to get my purse, I walked past our deck upstairs and it lit up with lightening.  By the time I went back downstairs, Todd had already ordered takeout.  The poor delivery guy was soaking wet, but the food tasted good. A new Duck Dynasty episode came on so while everyone else watched, I broke out my sewing machine and made some napkins from the fabric Brooke and I picked out in Utah.

Saturday: Girls and I were off early to Holiday Plaza. Sophie wanted to check the ice skating times for a get together she is planning for this week.  She painted ice skates and stamped "meet you at the rink" in turquoise blue.  Todd planned a lunch date with some friends from the branch so I finally got to eat at Angelo's, a restaurant Kathy Black recommended almost a year ago.  We had smoothies and ice cream outside under an umbrella for dessert. It was so hot and humid it felt like we were steaming.  Brigham met me at the subway and we went to Luohu for a few things on his list and a few things on mine.  We also ended up with this camera stick, which was not on our list, and it turned out to be a hit.  Gabe Granata was back in town and we enjoyed catching up with him and seeing how his family was acclimating  to life back in the USA. Jealous they got to see the Kesters! Sure miss them all, living far away from home sure makes solid bonds with our friends we meet here.

Sunday: Big day today, a new family moved into our branch. They have six kids, five of them were there today, but three oldest are headed to BYU and a mission.  Two will stay here, a 15 year old boy and 17 year old girl.  It's like Christmas in our branch when new friends come to stay for a while.  Also, Rhoda and the AZ sisters were back, yessssssss. We watched The Saratov Approach, yikes, not the best while having two missionary children out serving.  Popcorn for dinner!

Have a great week, keep in touch & come visit!
